    People don't understand that in a real fight you're not "playing roles." Using this defense to go in and ram would be very effective, obviously Seth can't actually do that to his training partners and even without ramming them and throwing elbows or grappling, they're still having a hard time dealing with it. That should tell you something.

  • @af4396

    Not only do people pretty much always aim for the head, but hands do f*** all at protecting the head. Boxers have gloves on. You try to stop my fist from doing damage to your head if your little hands are there. Dedicating your frames to your head is much more intelligent, especially since you can keep distance for body shots in many ways that don't require blocking, or you're just going to close distance anyways and protect your head while doing so.

    IMHO self defence is more a mental than technical challenge. One needs to be able to react quick and smart in a shocking situation.

  • @Carnerd101

    If you're in an open area and your opponent knows how to keep distance, I'd say this is useless. But, it looks like it'd be useful in an enclosed space; in a crowded club, a kitchen, the bus. It's definitely harder to get to the body in those situations. Great video Seth.

    Aint nobody aiming for the body in the street. Street fights last seconds, not minutes, and not rounds. From a sport style perspective, there is no need to put "money in the bank" with body shots, even if your aim is to go for the liver. From a pure just street fight perspective where no one is trained, which is most street fights, they don't even know to hit anywhere but the head, let alone know how to.

    Sambo was not created to keep let foreign influences out, it was created after a study of a lot of folk wrestling, judo and jiujitsu (there was originally no striking in it, it was a purely grappling art) and keeping what's effective. Stalin still didn't like it, the inventor of Sambo was arrested, tortured and shot.

    Imagine you're fighting for your life on the street. Imagine there are no courts, prosecutions and trials afterwards. Would you be fighting against a boxer who can give punche, or a guy who learned hundred ways to attack your throat, eyes or break your neck? Aikido is a dynamic jiu jitsu with a 1000yr old tradition. Nice techniques that control the oponent are only for safety issues. Evade, go for throath is where the real fight ends. People are idiots.

    Weird, I've been in/watched a lot of school fights and street fights, and I'd say body shots have been about a third of all shots. Only last year I got sucker punched in the ribs (not that any guard would have helped me before I realized something was going on). I'm surprised that my experience is so different than the normal

    So real world statistics disagree against internets opinions? (With a hint of salt that is the internet aka RUclips) For people working with patients/clients that have a higher tendency of getting violent the horns/thai helmet/elbow spaghetti is what they a trained. Why? It gets the best bang for buck.

    Unless you are dumb, when your stupid opponent is lying on the ground, you will go ahead and grab something to hit that idiot on his head. That's why in Judo, Judokas NEVER try to play the ground game. 1. There will be more than 1 enemy trying to hit you. 2. When you are on the ground, people will grab a chair or something to hit you. BJJ is stupid.

  • @Diablokiller999
    @Diablokiller999 8 часов назад

    Coming from several self defense schools it's easy to understand - it's easier to take a punch to the body than a punch to the face (duh). So avoid head damage at all cost - you are not in the ring, a knock out can mean death u know! And most street punches go to the head anyway... I really don't understand why it is so hard for people to make the difference between sports and self defense, you don't do 5x3min rounds on the street, you don't know your opponent (strength, endurance), you want to finish it as fast as possible with minimal effort and maximum security since failure means death. Don't eat punches and finish the fight with your cerebellum, that's it.

    Why would anyone attack you without a weapon?

  • @N-John533
    @N-John533 9 часов назад

    It's been my experience that in the street outside of any kind of regulatory event, most attackers strike at the head for 1 of 2 reasons, Shock Value, or they expect a one hit knock out. If they do go for the body, it is to shove or grapple, like you mentioned, which means they want you on the ground. just grab them at that point and they come down with you. But if someone actually wants to do you harm, they will bring a weapon, in the USA, that means a pistol, possibly even loaded with the wrong ammo. Don't attempt to guess though, even wrong ammo can go boom, but not a pretty sight. It is known as a breech explosion for a reason. Yeah, I watched some police videos of confiscated guns from the streets. It was a laugh fest, those folks out there have zero training, so much mix and match ammo, wrong caliber, loaded facing the wrong direction. One pull of the trigger the gun could have exploded in their hand.

    8:52 - Forget 4 or 5 of them. One is enough. Its legs alone are ~6ft tall. It can send a grown lionness flying with a back kick. I haven't seen one irl, but I bet it'd be terrifying. And since y' all mentioned ostriches, technically they _are_ dinosaurs and they can probably kick you to death or peck your skull open. The upgraded version, the cassowary, would probably go all velociraptor on your guts...

    I feel the system might have felt less taxing and open to body shots if you rolled your shoulders forward and hunched your back a bit more like Alan seems to? Like if you made your objective to fall forward into your opponent and hit them on the way "through" vs rearing up and finessing your striking like you are more used to doing?

    Hey, Seth. I really like what you said about "you never really can [totally-realistically simulate self-defence]". I'm a passive and active self-defence practitioner ("passive" as in pre-physical-combat awareness, tactics, psychology, etc; "active" as in physical combat), and even when I'm teaching people the physical stuff in slow motion drills, I'm always worried people don't know how to fall and will dislocate their shoulder, break their arm/wrist/fingers, or will go too hard with each other and add too much force to techniques and hurt themselves or the other person; this is why I'm very careful to outline the body mechanics of everything and potential risks if done poorly, before setting them off to practice what I showed them. I do create psychological simulations, where I display extreme vocal and facial expression aggression and "craziness", but I'm always controlling the body and making sure not to hit anything vital. This way, it gets pretty close, but in the end It's always difficult to simulate a completely realistic self defence situation safely, because unlike martial arts, self-defence isn't about skill, sportsmanship, and glory, but about threat-of-life and survival at all costs, where "rules", "ethics", and "the law" go out the window. Though there are ways that psychology and empathy can be used to both de-escalate and create understanding, even after physical attacks have begun, to bring things back down; this takes a lot more psychological training, but is the method I prefer, which I believe works for 90% of street fights, since most of them start from a place of insecurity or fear of danger, not malice.
